Happy Lunar New Year!

Just a quick update on our Egypt project in case you haven't been following on Seesaw. We are now up to chapter 15 in our story. Some of the students may not quite have reached that stage, but the chapters 1-15 are now on the window outside the class for everyone to catch up. From this stage on, we will move through the final chapters together.

Today (Wednesday) and tomorrow, the two classes will be participating in some challenges that relate to events from chapters 14/15. We have an awful lot of video/photos from today's activities, and I will try my best to upload them all to Seesaw before the holidays.

On February 24th, Carnaval, we will celebrate the end of our Egypt topic with a short performance. The students will dress up as Ancient Egyptians and perform a ceremony related to the Egyptian afterlife. If they are deemed worthy by Osiris, they will be accepted into Aaru and go to enjoy a party in the classroom! If they aren't deemed worthy...

I will send out an invite e-mail tomorrow with more details about the show. All parents are invited to come, but of course you will only be accepted into Aaru if you are dressed up :)

When we come back from the holiday, the students have two major projects to work on to be ready for our big Egypt celebration. The first is an adventure story that they will draft, write and publish themselves. The second is a 5pt project from their Egypt folder on either maths, art, technology or culture. These will also be displayed at the celebration.

We have lots of work to do when we get back so have a restful holiday!

Monday/Tuesday January 16/17th

The two CE1 classes are working at slightly different schedules now because of some timetable differences, but both are making progress on their topic.

This week we will be learning a bit about world history (and where the pyramids fit in) as well as working on hieroglyphics and adventure story writing. You can keep track on what we are doing via Seesaw as I am asking students to record their progress there. This is also a good way for you to review the reading at home. I think most of the students are getting into the story now. There was an interesting theory today that perhaps Bob and 'the man in the thawb' are the same person...

We are planning to end the topic on February 24th with a ceremony to celebrate what we have learned. This also happens to be the day that the French Section will celebrate Carnaval. I think it will be great if we all dress up in Egyptian costumes on that day. We will be making masks in class, so it is really just clothes that will need to be prepared. Look out for more details about this in next week's Weekly Memo.

Tomorrow and Thursday, we will begin work on the mummification of our class mummy...

Janvier semaine 19

Wednesday and Thursday January 11/12th

Wednesdays and Thursdays are always busy days as we do our morning learning stations. We got through a lot of things in both English and maths classes this week.

In literacy stations we were working on some strategies for reading particularly when you don't understand a word. It was interesting that most of the students told me their number 1 strategy was to 'skip' the word! These things take time, but I think strategies for reading (particularly at sentence level) are key for comprehension.

We also did a station learning about suspense writing. Towards the end of the Egypt topic, the students will write their own adventure story and suspense will be a key feature. The idea today was to write a paragraph where something is introduced but kept hidden from the reader. We want to make the reader imagine and really want to keep reading to find out what it is.

In maths class we are now working on geometry. One group of students went on a map walk to draw a route that they took around school. Another group practiced giving directions to one another as 'human robots'. We also did some work on compass directions which can be seen on Seesaw.

In the afternoon we continued working on the adventure story. Most of the students are progressing well and starting to understand how the story fits in with class activities. I was particularly pleased at one point this afternoon when the classroom spontaneously erupted into a whole-class debate on whether or not Bob is a 'good guy'. The students were able to use points in the story to support their argument or rebuke someone else's!

A lot of students have asked to take their folder home each day. It's great that they want to do that, but I hope they can remember to bring it back each day as it is really important!

Monday and Tuesday January 9/10th

We are really getting into our Ancient Egypt topic now, and I hope the students are enjoying it as much as I am. On most days, we will do class activities in the morning then in the afternoon students will continue to work through the adventure story and on their own activities. The goal for this week is for everyone to have finished reading chapter 6. I have included some questions at the end of each chapter now, and I will ask the students to Seesaw their answers to help make sure they understand.

We have been learning about the Ancient Egyptians view of the afterlife these days. I told the students the story about what they believe happens when you die - this could be a great thing to discuss with them and ask them to explain to you at home. Hopefully after the new year break we will do our own reenactment of the ceremony in class.

Some of the other things that we have been working on are directions (with Blue-bots and compass points), levers and shadufs, and hieroglyphics.

Please remind students to practice for their spelling test on Wed/Thur this week. It has been a long time since we did the last one so I am expecting some rustiness!
