CE1 English Update

Firstly, an apology for not keeping you updated on events in our class. It has been a difficult couple of weeks after Chinese New Year, but everything is okay now and we are getting back into our work rhythm in class. Please note that there were no spelling tests this week because of this disruption, but we will be back to normal next week.

Our Ancient Egypt project is coming to a close, and now the focus in class is on what the students can create and produce to demonstrate what they have learned. This week, they split into four groups to complete an activity which will be displayed next week at our Carnaval celebrations. It was wonderful to see each of the groups working away independently at their own tasks.

Please remember that the Carnaval activity begins at 1:40 in the amphitheater, and will continue afterwards with a party in the two CE1 classrooms. During the party, the students' work will also be displayed for you to enjoy. Students should come dressed in their Egyptian costumes, but also make sure they have something suitable for sport as we will still have sport class in the morning. Don't forget, you are more than welcome to dress up and join in the fun!

Today, as part of our Chinese cultural work, we were very lucky to have a lesson in martial arts from Nicolas and a calligraphy class. We heard lots of interesting stories about the history of martial arts and Shaolin Wushu, and the students enjoyed guessing which animals the fighting styles represented (I think Kung Fu Panda helped with that!). Calligraphy isn't easy, but some of the students did a wonderful job with their 'yong' characters. For those who weren't so please with their efforts please remember that 'fail' is just First Attempt In Learning! Like everything, it takes a lot of practice.

I will post a link here and on Seesaw tomorrow afternoon for the first 20 chapters of our Ancient Egypt adventure story. Most of the students have been able to follow the story well, and I was particularly happy to see light bulbs going off as we read chapter 19 and students were able to make a connection back to what they read earlier in the story. Hopefully, this experience will encourage more students to take on reading chapter books as well as picture books now.
